Characteristics of the payee verification service
- The payee verification service is available within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). However, both parties to a SEPA transaction (the payer's bank and the payee's bank) must be participating in the Verification of Payee scheme and must be available at the time the service is provided.
- The payee verification service allows the payer to verify that they are sending funds to the intended payee based on the IBAN account number and payee name provided. The result of the verification at the payee's bank may be as follows:

1. Entering the account number and name of the payee
The payer verifies the payee of the payment. The payer enters the account number in IBAN format and the name of the payee, and then sends it for verification.

2. Verification
The payee's bank performs the verification

3. Verification result
The verification result is returned to the payer.
Match – the account name is the same
Close match – the account name is similar
No match– the account name is different
Verification check not possible
Result | What it means | How to proceed |
---|---|---|
Match | The account and recipient name entered by the client are exactly the same. | Authorize the order. |
Close match | The account name entered by the client is similar to the account name registered with the recipient's bank, but it is not identical. | We will provide the client with the correct account name and recommend accepting the account name registered with the recipient's bank. |
No match | The account name entered by the client is not registered with the recipient's bank for the given account number. | We recommend that the client contact their business partner and verify the accuracy of the data entered. Only after clarification do we recommend entering the correct data and using the recipient verification service again. |
Verification check not possible | It is not possible to verify the recipient, e.g. because the recipient's bank does not support this service or there has been a failure of interoperable systems and the recipient's bank is not available. | Verification can be repeated later. If it fails again, we recommend contacting your business partner to verify the correct payment instructions. |
